Your Three Most Memorable Moments of 2008

A year isn’t made of seconds, minutes, and hours, or at least not in the rear view mirror. In retrospect, a year is made of moments: sparkling moments that light up the corners of your memory for years to come, chilly moments that you try to shake off as quickly as possible, and shadow moments—the ones you know are there yet can never quite put your fingers on.
This week, I want to hear three moments from 2008 that were your most memorable. What made them so special? And is there anything you can do to make more memories of that kind in 2009?
Here’s my list of 2008’s Top Three:
1. Enjoying a glass of champagne with friends on a sunset cruise in Seattle as we celebrated our wedding anniversaries. I learned that making the effort to create special, unrepeatable moments is worthwhile, and good friends add luster to, well, pretty much anything.
2. Playing “monkey in the middle” with B and Roo. This game nearly always ended with the three of us, giggling in a pile and appreciating the pleasure of a simple game and undivided attention.
3. Getting the chance to perform in front of large crowds week after week this summer and making kids crack up. Who knew that I’d enjoy public performance and find a niche for myself there?
It’s your turn! Take a moment to reflect on what made 2008 a pleasure for you, and if you’re up for it, share them with us. Either way, I hope we all find ways to make 2009 memorable in all the right ways.

Such a nice idea!
1. Saying goodbye to my dad as he left for a year in Cambodia
2. Seeing Pontifex Maximus and the Ara Pacis Augustae in Rome (okay, that’s two, but I was equally awe-struck by them both!)
3. Going out to lunch with my best friend and hearing him spill out all of his woes and thoughts to me- it would have been an ordinary lunch had it not been for all that honesty poured out.
Here’s to a good year! Am glad you got me pulling up all the old memories of this year.

My three most memorable moments of 2008:
1) Being beyond tears as my wife and I buried the 6th of our kitties, who died one a day for a week, due to a virulent strain of distemper that ravaged our region. The vets were wonderful, but they didn’t have a vaccine till 4 months later.
2) Having friends help us move to our new house. Repaying them by feeding them steak just didn’t seem adequate at the time, but it’s the best we had at the moment.
“Good friends help you move, great friends help you move your junk.”
3) Talking to an engineer at a meeting of my Asperger support group. It led me to being hired as CIO of a mid sized manufacturing company that is the world leader in their market.

1) Becoming a Canadian citizen
2) Crossing the finish line for my first gold medal in dragon boating.
3) My grandson’s face when he got off the plane when he and my daughter came to visit.

Hey Sara, your #3 has me curious – what did you perform??
My list of memorable moments from 2008:
1. Five day whitewater rafting trip to the Snake and Salmon rivers of Idaho – what made it so memorable were these moments of really feeling disconnected from the normalness of life – and feeling connected, very much, to our earth and all her beauty.
2. Starting my blog. What an amazing journey this has turned out to be, way more than I ever expected!
3. Biking to work. I did this many days from spring through fall – and this ended up to be so good for my both physically and mentally. I can’t wait for spring to come again…

July 4, Sea Ranch, CA
We escaped the smoke filled San Francisco Bay Area and headed to the north coast for the long holiday weekend. Standing on the deck of our vacation rental with a close view of the ocean, I realized I could stand there for the rest of my life. It was the first time in a very long time that I could just be.

Great post! This year has been ful of changes for us so here goes.
1) Standing at the front of the church, with my sister and friends beside me to promise my life to my best friend.
2) Standing on the balcony of a B&B in Pacific Grove with my husband’s arms around me, trying to believe we’re actually on our honeymoon.
3) Sitting at dinner with my husband (last night), realizing that even though he got laid off that day, I’m still so happy just to have him as my husband. It was a great night.
December 11th, 2008
Wow, I started this comment yesterday and got lost in a sea of emotions!
1. I can never forget the moment that my little one broke her arm. It broke my heart to see her in pain. Surgery and everything that came after that was so hard – I hoped I could wish that moment away
2. When my little one saw her dad after 3 months – we had to stay back in India after she broke her arm, and she Skyped with dad everyday. When he came down to India to bring us back, she could not believe what she saw when he walked in the door. He knelt down and said Hi – she stepped back, lifted a finger and poked him. It was amazing!! It was a confirmation that he was for real – and then she was totally normal
3. My second one was born just an hour and a half after we stepped into the hospital. It was like watching a sitcom – and I had a baby at the end of it!
Man, oh man, I am all babied out
Great post Sara – it is wonderful reading about everybody else’s moments!

Today I wrote about My Home Birth (http://justplainjoy.blogspot.com/2008/12/my-home-birth-story.html), which is one of the things I’m most thankful for this year.
The other two would be my six month maternity leave and seeing my husband become a father.

At some point, you’re going to have to ignore me when I say, “This is one of my favorite “three things” posts yet!”
I feel like the girl at the club who screams, “Oh my god! That’s my jam!” at the opening notes of every third song.
Still, I’m loving having the opportunity to hear what happened in your lives, the good and bad and simply memorable. You’ve given great ideas on things to try, places to visit, and simple pleasures. Thank you so much, and I’d love to hear from more folks who want to share!

My three top memories 2008
1. I was att a camp for knowing myself, I got an insight that changed my life from ordenary to outgoing and very liked.
2. I wished to go to the above camp but it was to expensive, I came up on the idea that I could get sponserd if I wrote aboute my experience. And I got sponserd of about 3000 dollar. Wow! little me made it with only beliving in myselfe.
3. I have faced my biggest fear this year, being myself and beeing proude of it.
December 17th, 2008
First for me would be getting myself and my partner and kid out of a very toxic 13-year relationship (long story). I started the year without that person, and the year has been the best of my life.
Second is deciding to make The Usual Error Project our career, and all the joy and excitement and terror living your dreams brings.
And lastly, discovering myself without all the fog I’d been living in, and realizing that I rock. (:
Thank you, again, for asking such an awesome and thought-provoking question. (:

1. Getting the confidence to write my blog on an almost daily basis and finding out I actually have something to write.
2. Supporting my daughter as she studied long hours for her highschool finals; as her cook, massuese, coach, and even tutor. And then celebrating her getting the score she aimed for and even more celebrating that she now believes she can do whatever she puts her mind and energy into.
3.Getting telephone calls from my son who is working in the wilderness of Western Australia – just ‘cos he wants to say hello to his Mum and then hearing him say, “Sure, come & meet me when I travelling – I’d love to spend some time with you – how about Tibet?”

2) Watching Obama win- in the same spot I gave birth to my son.
3) Getting into a car accident when I was 7 months pregnant. Not a good memory, but one of those that I won’t forget.
Lots of other great stuff- discovering GTD, getting our finances in order, spending time in the OR and ICU (on the provider end!), several instances of helping save lives, spending time with my kids, my friends, my self…

1. Visiting with family – my sister from Canada, whom I met up with for a holiday in NZ, and my sister in Tasmania, with whose family I stayed. We’ve been split across continents for so many years and every catch-up is precious.
2. Visiting with friends – I’ve had bad health for some years now, and am going through a pretty good patch right now, so am making the most of being socially active.
3. Selling some of my art – I make it because I love it, but it’s an added boost and very gratifying when someone else likes it too, and will reach into their wallet to have it.
