Three Experiences You’d Like to Have
Posted on October 08th, 2008 in Simple Living

There was a great discussion here a few weeks ago on the importance (or lack thereof) of life experiences. While there were a lot of different viewpoints, there seemed to be somewhat of a consensus that new experiences, whether simple or extravagant, are an important part of life. So that’s the question for this week: what three new experiences would you like to have? They can be reality-based or way out of left field; that’s up to you. Here’s what I came up with:
- Snorkel in a gorgeous, fishy location.
- Perform on stage and get some applause. Singing, dancing, stand-up—I’m not sure what, it’s just the stage rush I’m curious about.
- Get swept away on a whirlwind trip and have no idea where we’re going until we’ve landed.
So if you’re gutsy enough, spill the three new experiences you’d like to have!

Hmmm. Tough call. And I’m sure if you ask the same question tomorrow you’ll get different answers from everyone…
1. Sail the coast of Turkey.
2. Compete in a surfing competition.
3. Tour the “real China.”
Interesting that two of my three choices involve the sea. I’m originally from the coast but have been “land locked” in Quebec for over 15 years now.
The trip to China is something I would like to do with my family. We have an adopted Chinese daughter and I’d love for her to explore the country when she gets older. But I’d want to see much deeper than the China that was “on show” when we went to get her…
Thanks for another thought provoking posting.
Cheers,
Adam

1. Go to Germany and try to find ancestors with a genealogical expert and guide/translator. My grandfather emigrated to this country from Germany in the early 1900’s. I’ve done some genealogical research but the only people with the same last name as myself are in my immediate family. Oh, yea, and enjoy the trip and maybe take in a few other countries in Europe!
2. Spend some time and get tips firsthand from a sports professional superstar while they’re at the top of their game – bicycling, baseball, or golf come to mind.
3. Spend a few days with the President of the US, CEO of a Fortune 500 company, or another high profile, influential person to really see what’s it like to be in their shoes.

I want to continue what I’m doing right now: living deeply and writing about it.
As I’ve mentioned, I love history so I spend part of my time understanding the revolutionary changes going on in the world today. When I was a kid I wanted to travel and see the world, and I did. By the time I was 26 I had lived in Europe twice and had traveled around the world. See Building a Solid Foundation: http://cheerfulmonk.com/2007/11/12/building-a-solid-foundation/ …it’s about how “dreams have moved my life forward and enriched my life”. So I do think dreams can be motivating.
I’d rather get immersed in challenging projects than travel now, but we do take about one trip a year, mostly to visit our daughter in the Midwest.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! There’s such a range of answers, and so many I want to do, too! From giving a ton of money to charity to traveling to eye-opening locales to loving unconditionally… Where to start?
I’m so inspired by your responses. To be honest, it makes me realize that I need to take some active steps to experience a few things on my list, simply because there are so many others items to try as well and life is limited.
If you haven’t responded yet, keep ‘em coming and I’ll keep reading them!

Ah boy, what a marvelous question, Sara!
Let’s see…
1) Permanent enlightenment
2) Visit all 7 continents and have a mind-blowing experience on each of them
3) Experiencing being a part of a society of awakened people

Ariel: Glad you enjoyed the question! I love how high you’ve set your standards; it’s inspiring.
October 16th, 2008
I’ve been so busy at work, but had this marked to respond for awhile!
1.) Write the book I’ve always had in my head.
2.) I already travel with my children, but as they get older I want to do the kind of traveling where we learn about history, see new and exciting parts of the world and have those great never-forget experiences together.
3.) *here’s the dreaming one!* Have one of those ‘perfect’ relationships where boy girl meet, fall in love and are happy. No baggage, no drama, no dishonesty. I want that!
October 16th, 2008
Wendy: Those relationships are out there! And best wishes with the book; it’s such a great goal to set for yourself.
