Four Simple Ways to Make the Most of Your Day
Whether we like it or not, days bleed into one another and weeks slip by quickly. I hate the feeling of looking back on a month and thinking, “Wait… Now what did I do again? Anything?” One way to ease your mind that your days have been well spent is to focus less on checking tasks off a list, and more on making each day valuable to you and to the world.
Do One Thing That Scares You
This one has become a cliche, but that doesn’t make it irrelevant. (Please don’t run into traffic just to get heart rate up, though.) Seek out fears that may be holding you back from trying new things. Talk to that cute girl on the bus. Negotiate a deal. Present an idea at work. Attempt a ridiculously complex meal. When you regularly do things that kind of freak you out, you stretch your boundaries and create a much bigger, more rewarding comfort zone to play in. “Safe” and “stuck” don’t have to be synonymous.
Do One Thing That Soothes You
The world doesn’t have to take care of you: you can take care of yourself. You need to take care of yourself. If you’re angry, find a way to release it. If you’re frustrated, do something nice for yourself. If you’re tired and cranky, enjoy a treat instead of martyring yourself for no good reason. Take a moment, just once a day, to make yourself feel good, and remind yourself that you’re responsible for your own happiness.
Do One Thing for Someone Else
Being selfless feels good—more than one study has demonstrated this. (Kind of throws a kink in the “selflessness” of the act, but we won’t worry about that…) Taking time to do a kindness for another person reminds you of the reasons you have to be thankful, all while strengthening your relationships with others. If you give and truly expect nothing in return, it’s rare to have any regrets about it.
Do One Thing for the Future
The future is a pretty fluid concept here: next week, next month, your 80th birthday… You can transfer funds to your savings accout, spend time talking with your child, do some yoga as part of a weight loss plan, anything that gets you one step closer to your goals for the future. Regardless of whether you’re learning French for next year’s trip or making a quilt to be passed down for generations, you need to stay connected with your future on a regular basis. That’s where some of your best moments are yet to be realized.

I love the simplicity in these tips. You write them so elegantly.
If I may add my own 2 cents, I’d like to suggest that in doing something that scares you, do something that scares you a little bit rather than a lot. Overcoming fears is most successful when done gradually, in baby steps.

These are 4 excellent ideas for making the most of a day. I’m going to give it my best shot to do at least one of them today!

Great advice. The one that really connects with me today is the one on doing something that soothes you. I think if we all did something that made us feel better, then we would not have so many cranky pants walking around in the world.

Sara, what an eloquent post. Doing one thing is a incredibly simple way to gain progress in your life. With your formula of 4 per day that’s 1460 steps in a year to change…and change is great.
Some days it seems that everything scares…thinking about that growth makes it all worth while. Thanks for sharing – I’m sharing this with my Twitter users.

Hi Sara:
I’ve started really marketing my ebook–”How to Be More Creative – A Handbook for Alchemists”–, which I really hadn’t been doing up to this point, and today I even hired a graphic designer to design a cover and make a 125 x 125 affiliate button. That’s scary because it’s something completely different from my regular work as a lawyer.
My feet have been hurting a bit lately–maybe from all the jogging I’ve been doing–so I think I’ll give myself a pedicure tonight.
I’m creating a free ebook on how to “Write, Publish and Market Your Ebook”, which is something for the future (hopefully it will bring more traffic and subscribers to my blog).
Now I just need to do something for someone else. Maybe my free ebook can count here as well.

This was very calming and soothing for me to read! I do just fine in the arenas of taking care of myself, doing things for others, and working towards the future. Doing things that scare me, however, often just slide around in my mind with no real plans to follow through.
Thanks for the motivation to pin one down and plan some follow through!

My comment’s similar to Maximizing U’s, but I was thinking about frequency instead of degree. Personally, doing something scary once or twice a week feels about right – or things might get a bit TOO scary…

“Do One Thing That Scares You” is the most important one for me, because that’s the one I tend to postpone.
Also, doing what scares you the most, in the long run increase will power as well.

I love the wonderful simplicity of this.
I think that we all do things like this in our everyday lives. The key is to do these things and to be aware consciously of doing them. They mean more to us and others if they are done with good will and purposeful action.

I love your tips to do one thing that scares you and one thing that soothes you… good advice!!

Thank you. This was just what I needed to read right now to get myself motivated to follow through with some goals I’ve set. I tend to soothe myself to the point of laziness or procrastination or avoidance of bigger-picture tasks and never making progress on future goals. Now I’m going to get off the computer and take action.

I read this yesterday and again today. It all makes perfect sense and some days I am able to follow it. But some days (weeks) I get kind of frozen and can’t move forward. It’s like being stuck in molasses and I get nowhere. I wish I knew why.
I think it may be “the future” thing. Since my future is up in the air, I have trouble deciding what needs doing? So I think I’ll try doing one thing for the future today, even if I’m not sure it’ll pan out, and see what happens.
