Quick and Dirty: Sync Your Life
I must live in a time warp. Somewhere between getting out of bed and getting to the sink, I gain four minutes. From the time I head down to the stairs till the time I my feet hit the kitchen tile, I’ve lost them again, and then some. By the time I get into the car, I’ve managed to kill another three minutes. I’m late! Hit the gas!
In reality, my corner of the world is not a time-keeping anomaly. It’s just that I have every single clock in my life set to different times, and it’s slowly making me crazy. I never know what time it is, which was never a problem when I telecommuted. Now that I need to arrive on time, it’s a big issue. The 10-minute differential is the difference between showing up calm and composed compared to late and disheveled.

Set It and Forget It
Fortunately, it’s an easy fix. I finally synced all the clocks to the same time. (And am proposing a new clock for the one at work that gains five minutes every time we reset it.) It’s nice. I don’t have those moments of panic when I think I ‘m running late, or when I accidentally kill time I don’t have. It’s turned into (wait for it…) one more way to make life simpler.
So take a moment to peruse your home, car, and work for renegade timepieces. I’d recommend going by your boss’s clock if promptness is important in your workplace. If it’s not so urgent, go by the clock that’s the biggest pain the ass to reset.
Don’t forget to check your:
- Alarm clock
- Backup clock (you know, the one that’s eight feet away so you’re forced to get out of bed…)
- Car clock
- Microwave/stove/etc
- Bathroom clock
- Phone/Digital devices

One of the benefits of not having a lot of clocks — less syncing! In fact, I dislike how many clocks are in a typical home. If I could get the one off our stove I would, but at least the microwave and toaster oven gave up on me setting them and we don’t have a t.v. so no blinking stupid DVD/VCR/DVR lights. That leaves just our computers, phones and the clock on the bedroom dresser — the only ones I’d have if I could help it.

Meg, I had no idea there might be a setting on the appliances that would turn the clock off. That would be awesome! Who really needs two clocks blinking at them all the time? At the same time, I do like having clocks in a few places around the house, because it means that I never have to wear a watch.

Oh man, I need to do this. All of my clocks are different times and it drives me crazy! Thanks for the reminder to set all of my clocks to the same time. I think it’ll help my sanity haha.

I love the fact in your list of personal clocks to check and reset, you don’t mention a wrist watch!

Nice post! I’ve run into similar issues, and have simply pared down my timepieces to one. I too was becoming crazed with the loss and gain of time.
I’ve also reduced the number of “things” in my life that require me to actually know the time. Not an easy task.

I used to set my Mom’s car clock 5 minutes ahead because she was always running behind… Evil, I know. It took her about 6 months to figure out what I was doing.

Love it! I used to think that if I set my clocks ahead it would actually help me be on time, but I realized it just confuses me. Thanks for the reminder to get it ALL in sync.

I only have two clocks in my flat, one on the oven and one on the bedside radio. I judge my timing by the travel reports on the radio in the morning.

Great post! I commented earlier on this, but wanted to let you know that I’ve managed to sync my life by eliminating all but one timepiece! It was the result of a power outage that set this in stone for me. I love your writings! – Kahnrad, Personal Development Coach
