Three Perfectly Acceptable Reasons to Declutter Today

The middle of the week is a fantastic time to put things off until the weekend. (At least for me; I’m notorious for not doing anything of importance until the weekend.) But not today: today is a perfect day to declutter. If you’ve been looking around your home and thinking, “I know this place was clean. Once. A while ago…” then do something about it today. Why? Try these reasons out:
1. Because it’s fun to find buried treasure. “Holy hell! I forgot I owned these earrings!” That’s the sound of me decluttering. It doesn’t have to feel like work or even an obligation. You’re on the hunt for treasure, and you just have to clear away the layers of distractions to get to it. You have gorgeous rooms in your home, treasured items, and forgotten gems hidden everywhere. Go forth and find them!
2. Because it’s never as bad as you imagine it will be. Decluttering isn’t an ancient torture method. “Oh, I couldn’t possibly start the decluttering process. That will take weeks!” News flash: it probably won’t. In all likelihood, you can make a huge dent with just an hour of time. Hint: Clear off the tabletops, counters, and other surfaces for the biggest impact and don’t waste time refolding the sock drawer.
3. Because tomorrow would be an even better day to wake up to a stress-free, soothing atmosphere. It’s easy to focus on the work it takes to declutter, so forget about all that. Consider the benefits that you could enjoy starting the very next day. One less day without tossing your place to find your keys is something you can do, and deserve to do. Get started today.
Have fun decluttering and don’t forget reason number three and a half: It’s a great excuse to reward yourself with a cold beer. Cheers!

I often dwell on the flipside of the first point (the contention of Peter Walsh et al that “clutter costs you”) but I rarely think of decluttering as being an excuse to rediscover my treasures!
Time to be brave and delve into the Mystery Craft Material Drawer (which, on a good day, can pass for Innsmouth
)..

Starting in the middle of the week is a great time because it gives you a few days to make enough progress to feel like you can take the weekend off. Of course any buried treasure you find (I really like this idea) will make you that much happier by the weekend.

4. You find things that you REMEMBERED but thought was lost forever! I recently found my guy’s grandmother’s gold vintage bracelet hidden in a chest. I also found a coat and a dress that I thought went into a wormhole.
5. It makes moving easier.
6. It feels good to give away things to people who appreciate it and will actually use it.

Because it’s always better than you expect when it’s done.
Because you can breathe easier.
Because it looks so damn gorgeous, and you don’t even have your mother-in-law coming over.
….and margaritas work just as great as beer…

I love these! Keep ‘em coming. I definitely identify with making moving easier. (That’s really a criteria for me: do I want to lug this thing somewhere else someday?) And sign me up for the margaritas and/or beer…

Nothing better to wake up the morning after decluttering!

What a great post! I’m all about decluttering. In fact, I just read this great quote today and you might enjoy it too: “Your immediate environment reflects your life. Clutter, dirt, or mess around you shows you are out of control. Keep your personal space well-ventilated, ordered, clean, and clutter-free. Make it your sanctuary for total wellbeing.” So true, right!?

Best reason for decluttering: We’re moving! Not only does it cost to move the clutter with you, but it’s a lot harder to fit into your new place.

Unfortunately for me it’s almost always as bad as I expect it to be. BUT, on the bright side it does always lead to number 3: “an even better day to wake up to a stress-free, soothing atmosphere.”
