30 Summer Pleasures You Can Enjoy Today
This year, summer took forever to arrive, or at least it seemed so in southwestern Idaho. Now that we’re in the thick of it, it’s time to stop and enjoy the best that the summer season offers before the nights get much shorter.
1. Drink a glass of lemonade (from a mason jar, if at all possible for maximum effect).
2. Sit outside and listen to the crickets chirp.
3. Enjoy the feel of hot cement under bare feet. Then, run like hell for the nearest grass.
4. Eat your lunch on the patio or under a tree. You’ll feel 100 percent more relaxed when you return.

5. Chase after the ice cream truck. $1.25 for an ice rocket may seem exhorbitant, but it’s a cheap price to pay for a nostalgic afternoon.
6. Enjoy the ambient noise and restful sleep that the soft hum of fans provide at night.
7. Look up and see the stars surrounding you instead of clouds.
8. Cut flowers for the dinner table and stick them in a drinking glass.
9. Lay on the lawn and daydream for an afternoon.
10. Treat yourself to iced coffee and linger on the bistro patio to enjoy the sights and sounds.
11. Run through the sprinklers.
12. Pour fresh strawberries over vanilla ice cream and call it a gourmet dessert.
13. Eat BLTs when it’s too hot to cook with tomatoes off the vine. (Personal note: I’m pretty sure Roosevelt is the one who ate all the tomatoes off the plant, so I’ll take a pass on this one…)
14. Admire how much your garden (or house plant) has grown since last summer and take a moment for gratitude.
15. Make fresh brewed ice tea right in the fridge. (Add a bag of lemon herb tea for even more delicious flavor.)
16. Take a cold shower after a workout and enjoy the refreshment that you can only get in the hottest months.
17. Take a walk along the beach, the greenbelt, the lake, or just down the street. Enjoy how mellow the world gets in the evenings.
18. Listen to Billie Holiday, who always sounds sultry and appropriate in August. Or Def Leppard. Whatever.
19. Play hooky for a day and catch frisbees in the park with the dog or a friend.
20. Eat fresh berries on your cereal instead of dehydrated ones.
21. BBQ corn on the cob and fresh fish. Make the neighbors jealous!
22. Enjoy a crisp glass of white wine in the company of butterflies (or just a good book).
23. Snuggle into a hammock for a lazy afternoon of dreaming and planning.
24. Take dinner outside, even if that’s just your stoop.
25. Memorize the smell of sunscreen as it’s being slathered on; that’s the smell of summer fun about to be had.
26. Wear flip flops everywhere you’re allowed.
27. Delight in the occasional summer storm. Nothing feels better than flannels in winter than a one-night excuse to wear flannels in summer.
28. Read a trashy book and savor every word. (I recommend Peyton Place and Valley of the Dolls.)
29. Use hot days as an excuse to go anywhere air-conditioned. Not needing a reason to go somewhere is a bit exhilarating…
30. Cheer on late-blooming plants on neighborhood walks or backyard strolls.
What makes you think of summer and what are some simple ways to capture that feeling? Please share your ideas in the comments!

For those days when the clouds are heavy and showers are imminent, we put on our bathing suits and go dancing in the rain!

Nice list…where I live every place is air conditioned in summer, sometimes so much that I need a sweater indoors (my office is one example). My favorite thing about summer is the cicadas. Summer isn’t here until I hear the first cicada sing. Favorite way to start my weekend is to take my coffee and breakfast out on the porch, listen as the cicadas start up their serenade and watch the hummingbirds take breakfast at the purple salvia plant on my deck.

This is what summer is all about! Brings me back to the days of lemonade stands (the parents did more work than we did). I wish entrepreneurship was still that easy!

We live in a big city, so so many of your wonderful list items don’t really apply–but they do make us wish for a place in the burbs or the country. (Note, some of these can be done in Central or Riverside Park. Our favorite? A holdover from childhood: Watching fireflys at night right when dusk starts. We feel like kids all over again.)
On a clear nite, watching the sun set. (We have a West view and can actually see a bit of the Hudson. Sigh. Love it.) The colors of striated blue and pink are just breathtaking.
Trying to appreciate the beauty of a thunderstorm…when we’re not busy screaming from the huge Kabooms and wondering if our electronics will be fried! LOL
Summer in the city is just plain hard. We use public transit and walk, a lot. So it’s pretty icky (try waiting for the subway and you’ll understand why we loathe summer…in the city)given the heat and humidity.
Once you accept the weather-related issues (and it’s increasingly harder as we age and with chronic health issues), you can focus on what you can enjoy here that you can’t anywhere else…even if some require pre-planning and advance work:
Shakespeare in the Park with some of the nation’s leading actors; free NY Philharmonic concerts (pack a picnic dinner and pretend you’re not sharing the great lawn with thousands of strangers…some of whom may provide delightful conversation)
Wonderful free movie nights and concerts all over the city
Restaurant Weeks where you can enjoy a bit of even five-star dining without breaking the bank.
Never being bored and having so many things you can do, you often are paralyzed by choices.
The possibility of some new discovery: new singer, new food, new restaurant, new talent in anything…literally around every corner.
Discovering new venues, including a new little place that serves incredible three-course dessert menu that’s worth the long wait to get in. (Chicalicious on the lower east side)
Getting discount tickets to Broadway shows, which showcase talent from around the globe. we did “theater week” this year for our birthdays and saw three top shows (orchestra seats) for the price of one full-price orchestra tickets.
People watching and listening. Still one of the best, and always free, things about this city.
Sampling the wonderful fresh fruits and veggies in the weekly local farmers markets (even if we do have to take a bus or subway to get to them).
Watching the tourists and helping where we can, with information and suggestions for what to see and do (Honestly. Times Square? There is so much more to NYC.)
Enjoying the fact that for the first time in decades, it was cool enough to go without AC in June and July. We only turned our AC on for the first time on August 5Th.
The thrill of not having to pay huge chunks of change for two months to Con Ed…what a summer treat.
Hey, you take your pleasures where you find them. I’d really like to hear how other city folks wring the juice from summer.

Mletta, thanks for bringing a city perspective to things—sounds pretty damn nice! (Outside of the subway wait, that is.)

Summer for me is all your list plus Camping with friends in tents (minus the mosquitos). So nice to rig up the tent, then prepare everything for the night, spend a lazy evening around a campfire (where allowed) bring the guitar and strum & sing along.
