Embracing Simple Style
Style has been on my mind a great deal lately. What’s the relationship between style and simple living? Are they intertwined, or roadblocks on each others’ paths?
As I reflect on personal style and public style, I can’t help noticing that simplicity is it’s own style. Every time I wear a plain white tank top and faded blue jeans, I feel much more in the spotlight than when I put on a coordinated outfit. Simple style is a screamingly bold statement: I’m good. I’m comfortable.
And while a life lived in just one shade of blue is perhaps not fully enjoyed, a healthy dose of simple style has been a grounding influence on me in the last few years.
Consider the following:
The effortless elegance of denim, worn to a soft, comfortable blue…
The easy conversations you’ve had while kicking around in your favorite sneakers, the ones you can’t wait to get a little dust on to take away the mall staleness…
The way the things you truly love make any outfit a bit magical….
The way the mildly overblown elegance of a classic chandelier is surprisingly well-matched by…
…the lacy decay of a rusted gate.
Simple style is about how things that have no business going together can blend seamlessly…
And the way a rumpled, well-loved bed is so much more inviting than a pristine one.
What are your favorites?

What a fun post! There are so many ways that simplicity can be expressed as a style. While your simple style is a plain white tank and faded blue jeans, mine might be a simple black dress with clean lines. My style is definitely simple, but in a classic, refined way that has the slightest hint of being snooty.

You can find beauty in absolutely anything.
When I’m having a conversation with someone, I like focusing on one part of them- an ear, a nose, a freckle- and being so in awe of how our bodies work. I mean, they’re pretty spectacular. You gain so much appreciation when you really LOOK at things/people.

Though my style isn’t exactly what many would call “simple”, I FEEL simple/comfortable/at ease with whatever I wear; be it jeans, ballet flats, and sweater with a pretty scarf or an off the shoulders cocktail dress and heels.
What matters to me is how much time I put into it (aside from sewing), how much money is spent and if I follow trends or my own personal style.

Ohhhh, I love this post.
I would define my style as simple: Nautical Style. I love Petit Bateau striped tops, Jeans or navy pants, Converse Sneakers or Ballet Flats. I like simple jewellry that compliments most of my outfits, Tiffany Silver Silver Ball Earrings, my wedding ring and a ring my DH gave me for the birth of my first baby.
What I love is being out, and spotting someone with that certain style. Just a wink of style, cheeky shiny style. Spunk.
Someone who knows who she or he is, so much so that they arent “worn” by their clothes, but their clothes are just an outward expression of whats going on inside.
Thanks, great post.

At first I thought the gate was an old elephant with psoriasis
Yes, simplicity is it’s own style and I’ve always liked the saying “it’s casual.”

I like all shades of Khaki, off white and blue.
They always look great and never go out of style.

I live in black T shirts and denim jeans, but in houses, I love white painted wood and real wood floors, shells and terracotta plant pots, handpainted crockery and folk-style tiles.
