A Simple Morning Routine to Get You out Fast!
Today’s post is from Sherri of Serene Journey. Sherri and her husband Gwynn share their tips to enjoying life and discuss topics like personal development, frugality, home and organizing, happiness and family.
Not everyone is a morning person, I get that, but mornings do happen to be my favorite time of day. It’s quiet and peaceful, so I can relax and soak in the stillness before my husband heads off to work and before the kids wake up. But whether you want to spend time enjoying the peace and quiet or indulging in some extra beauty sleep, it’s helpful if you can streamline the rest of your morning routine so you can still get out fast. Here are some tips for simplifying your morning routine and getting going in minimal time: the secret? Making the most of the night before.
The Night Before
1. Set the coffee pot. Add water and coffee to the coffee maker so all you have to do is flip the switch. If your coffee maker has a timer, use it! Let the fresh aroma of coffee permeate the house as you wake up. Consider setting out mugs and spoons and if you take sugar, spoon that out too.
2. Choose your clothes. Just like Mom used to do when you were 5. Choose your outfit the night before and hang it on the back of a door or drape it over the back of a chair. Check for stains, rips or tears and if there’s any ironing needed now’s the time!
3. Prepare lunch and snacks. This is a huge time and cost saver. Make a sandwich, grab some fruit or a yogurt, throw it in a bag and you’re done. It will taste better and be better for you, at a fraction of the cost of cafeteria food.
4. Pack up your bag. Pack up the laptop, project proposals, letters to be mailed and bills to be paid. Put your bag together with your shoes, jacket, keys, wallet or purse by the door you leave through. By doing this you don’t have to rush around looking for everything at the last minute and you also don’t have to worry about forgetting anything.
5. Most important tasks. Avoid stalling and struggling to find something to accomplish during the day by giving some thought to it the night before. Choose three of your most important tasks write them out and give some thought to any resources you may need to help you get them done. In the morning you have a clear list of things you would like to do and generally know how to go about accomplishing them.
The Morning
6. Shower quickly. Try limiting yourself to five minutes in the shower. Not only will this conserve water but it will greatly lessen the time you need to get ready in the morning. Consider using a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner or dare I suggest a 3 in 1? Shampoo, conditioner and body wash.
7. Choose a quick breakfast. I don’t recommend skipping breakfast because, as we all know, it really is the most important meal of the day. Instead, leave the bacon, eggs and hash browns for the weekend and choose something simple like toast, cereal or oatmeal. Smoothies can be a relatively quick breakfast alternative and they taste great!
Everywhere we look people are encouraging us to slow down to enjoy life, and I agree wholeheartedly. But getting ready in the morning is one area where I like to speed things up a bit so I can enjoy life (my day) sooner. Are you an early riser or do you enjoy your beauty sleep? Do you have additional tips that help you get through your morning routine quickly? Please share them in the comments!

My best advice on this subject is to throw the snooze alarm away…really, what is an extra 10 minutes going to do for you apart from slow you down and put you in a rush. Jo do it straight away, get out of bed and start the day.

Getting ready the night before is really as important as you say. You have a great routine listed here.
I would add, when you have kids, to make sure they do many of these same things, such as getting their backpacks packed up, their shoes and jackets ready, etc.
I myself take a shower at night, just so it is one less thing to do in the morning, since I also have to get three kids ready, not just me.

Great post. Not only will the night before stuff help you get out faster in the morning, it will help you sleep better too. I find that the peace of mind that comes with knowing that everything is ready to go does wonders for being able to fully relax and rest well.
Cheers,
Adam

Sherri,
Practical post! I’m not much of a morning person, but my wife is. She follows most of the tips that you describe.
I really like the idea of identifying the most important task the night before. It helps avoid my normal procrastination.

Great tips.
I find it useful to get everything ready for the next day as soon as I get home, even before grabbing a drink. That way I know I am set to go and can enjoy the rest of the evening doing the things I want.

Great ideas! I’m with Adam – having prepared for the day to come both physically and mentally helps me sleep soundly.
One more thing we do to speed the morning – when putting the leftovers in savers after dinner, we put two small portions on plates/bowls and stick them in the microwave right then. When we come down in the morning, just heat for two minutes and there’s a wonderful meal of lentils or rice and sauce, etc. Even leftover mac and cheese makes a great breakfast meal, more filling than cereal or toast and easier than oatmeal.

Super advice! I do not like getting up in the morning one bit, but I definitely find that the most helpful thing for me is having an outfit picked out for the next day. This saves me a LOT of time. In fact, I was just thinking this week about how I want to start planning out my outfits for the week on Sunday night so I don’t have to think about it during the week. This might be overkill for some people, but it could also be a great time-saver.
Thanks for these tips! Very useful!

@ Adam – Thanks! That’s a great point I guess it does take a lot of worrying/stressing off your mind, I hadn’t thought of it that way before…but maybe that’s why I sleep so well?
@ Roger – Writing out your MIT the night before is really helpful in getting you off on the right foot first thing in the morning.
@ Garry – That’s great! it’s like doing homework when you were a kid…do it as soon as you get home and then you can go out and play. I love it! Thanks.

Nice timing … I’ve been researching startup and shutdown routines.
I think how you bootstrap your day or cap your night makes all the difference in the world .. you spiral up or spiral down.

My best tip: Smoothies for breakfast !
Healthy, super-quick and delicious !
Just remember that you will need half a liter to keep you satisfied till lunch ! In the beginning it might feel a bit strange to have just liquids for breakfast, but soon your stomach will adjust !

@ J.D Meier – Thanks for your comment! Getting in the right frame of mind either first thing in the morning or when getting home from work certainly sets the tone for what follows. I look forward to reading what you find.
@ Eternal*Voyageur – I love smoothies too. They are a tasty healthy alternative to a larger breakfast that’s for sure and great time saver too!

I like your tip #5 the best. This way, I’m up and running without trying to remember where I left off yesterday. I’ve recently purchased a small blackboard to write these to-do’s so it’s easy to erase at the end of everyday and make new ones for the next.

Getting my things reading the night before is something I really have to work at.
I have to have protein in the morning (and very little carbs in general) so salad and some leftover chicken, fish or nuts is usually what I eat.
Thanks for the tips!

@ Laurie – I find setting the MIT the night before really helps with getting in the right frame of mind when I first wake up. I really like the blackboard idea.
@ Sagan – Great to hear! I love waking early as well and if I do sleep in I feel like I’ve behind somehow. Thanks for your comment!
@ Carla – You’re welcome I hope this post helps you get to where you want to be in prepping the night before.

First thing I do in the a.m. is reach over and turn on the stereo (sometimes radio sometimes a cd)… If not for the music, I’d have a tough time getting started!
May 1st, 2009
This is a great approach… I’m a big fan or processes and systems and automation and this idea has aspects of each… layout cloths to remove a decision or set up the coffee maker to remove a task from groggy hands and eyes.. doing these activities also help to wind down today and align your visons towards tomorrow.
Great stuff… I’ll have to add some of these to my own routine.
Thanks!
