37 Easy Ways to Say “I Love You”
Posted on March 12th, 2009 in Relationships

I can’t speak for everyone, but in my limited experience, relationships don’t have to be hard. One of the best ways to nurture a relationship is to let your partner know that you love and appreciate him or her. And even better than telling someone you love them is to show them you love them. If you’re in the mood for love, try saying “I love you” in a new way this weekend.
- Make their lunch to take to work.
- Leave a note on their pillow with a sweet message.
- Take on one of their household chores for a week and don’t even mention it.
- Give them a footrub. (If their feet are funky, soak a towel in water, microwave it to heat it up, and use it to rub them tootsies. Wonderful for them, less gross for you.)
- Pick up their favorite indulgence at the grocery store. (Mmmm… bacon…)
- Wear a nice outfit just for them.
- Light a candle at dinnertime.
- Automatically choose a movie your partner would enjoy for a night.
- Make their coffee in the morning.
- Leave a post-it note on their steering wheel.
- Sincerely compliment your partner the next time you have a nice thought about them.
- Put together a mini photo album or slideshow of pictures of you together.
- Put on a favorite song and share a dance. It’s amazing how much closer that 3 or 4 minutes can bring you.
- Turn down their side of the bed.
- Offer a hand massage.
- Tell a friend how much you love your partner.
- Try their hobby for a day. (Fore!)
- Gentlemen, open her car door. Ladies, open their door from the inside.
- Make “I love you” the last words you say to each other before drifting off.
- Put on their favorite cologne or perfume even if you’re just sitting around the house together.
- Hold their hand during a movie.
- Let them tell you about their day and their dreams, and really listen.
- Make a “Songs That Remind Me of You” playlist on their mp3 player.
- Towel off their hair after a shower.
- Feed them the first bite of dinner.
- Have a chilled glass of wine waiting at the end of a long day.
- IM just to say “hi” on your lunch break.
- Tell a joke and make your partner laugh.
- Put more covers back on their side.
- Ask their opinion.
- Ask questions before jumping to conclusions.
- Trust their judgement.
- Send a handwritten love note in the mail.
- Arrange for your partner to have a night out with their best friend.
- Keep their secrets.
- Call when you’re going to be late.
- Fix the toilet that won’t stop running. (Wait, maybe that’s just me…)
Remember that loving someone isn’t just a feeling, it’s a series of actions. What other ways do you show love to the folks in your life?

Hi Sara fantastic list. I LOVE all of these ideas!
Another one I do occasionally is to make his favorite meal and set everything up like a really nice restaurant. You know what they say the way to a mans heart is through his stomach!
Thanks for some really great ideas!

Very nice list that I will definitely use. I’m guilty sometimes of forgetting there are other ways to show love than just telling someone.

thanks

What a great list! I like the idea of taking over a chore for a week. I know my wife would love that, which one to take. That’s my dilemma. Hmmmm.
I think I’ll choose two – vacuuming and washing the dog. She is going to love me soooo much. Thanks.

Great list – just tweeted it. I was thinking about cleaning my boyfriend’s bathroom for him, but then decided not to. I don’t know what that says

3) Find a favorite class that fits their schedule and pay the tuition and books
4) Do the housekeeping and laundry for a month
5) Give a gift certificate to their favorite garden store
6) Give a bouquet of carnations with a single long stemmed rose in the middle

Hi Sara,
I love this list. So many great ideas. I would also add that another way to show someone that you love them is to love them unconditionally! Which, in my mind, means accepting them for who they are and not turning them into who you think they should be.
Hope all is well and have a great weekend!

My boyfriend is planning the whole weekend’s activities. Each day he has sent one packing item, ranging from dressy clothes to a camera and warm winter clothing (Minnesota still has snow on the ground).
This may take more planning and thought than a quick I love you, but it’s given us something to look forward to and will create lasting memories.

Awwww. Beautiful ideas there. The little things in life (and relationships) matter so much.
I just wish I had someone special in my life to do these things for! till, I suppose there’s no reason why I can’t do little loving things like this for other people in my life I love, right?

I love the list, Sara, especially
22. Let them tell you about their day and their dreams, and really listen.
Listening is so key to good relationships; it quietly shows attention, caring, and as you say, love. Do this one everyday – with anyone – and watch your relationships improve dramatically.

Hi Sara,
What a great list!
I like to think of love as a verb.
Here’s one: A scavenger hunt, with the end being some special gift. It doesn’t have to be large or fancy. Creating clues that are meaningful to the two of you is what makes this a real memory…

I think #30, 31, and 32 are the hardest. I didn’t do a good job with those in my first marriage (28 years) but am trying to do better in my new long-term relationship. It’s a struggle, but old dogs can learn new tricks sometimes.

Great list Sara!
I try to give her a footrub. Thanks for the tip to soak a towel in water, microwave it to heat it up, and use it to rub them tootsies. I know how wonderful it could be for her since I’ve had it done for me once.

First let me say that I love my partner very deeply & consider myself blessed. I’m afraid I found this article trite; an unfortunate mix of things people should do already (ask their opinion, hold hands, exchange chores, keep each other’s secrets), with acts of varying folly or futility (post=it notes, for goodness sake! What if your partner tells a joke & you don’t laugh? What if you are no good at telling jokes?). Every couple is different & the things that make their partnership work will differ too. Nobody should put their trust in a list like this, particularly one that, however inadvertently, endorses commercial products (yes, post-it notes again!).
