Three Simple Healthy Habits

I’ll be the first to admit I am not the healthiest of individuals. I eat a bit too much junk food and I have yet to exercise in any kind of commited fashion. The good news is that I’ve got plenty of room for improvement. (Optimism!) In that spirit, I’d like to devote today to a discussion of simple ways to be healthy.
Here are three things I’m going to try:
1. Chase Roo around the house at least once a day. It’s easy exercise, it’s fast, and it’s super fun.
2. Take a walk after dinner a couple of times a week to relax and unwind. As Mary Jaksch noted in How to Find Islands of Ease in the Chaos of Life, the benefits of walking go way beyond the physical.
3. Incorporate more fresh foods in my diet. I eat way too much processed food. I’m hoping to start a veggie garden this spring—small but yummy!
Whether you’re a fitness and food pro or a neophyte like me, please hop into the comments and share three healthy yet simple habits that work for you. Trust me, I need all the help I can get!

well two things i incorporated in my life this year is:
1. at work, I keep an empty bottle by my desk and whenever im thirsty i drink some filtered water. I do this after i have had coffee too for rehydration.
2. and twice a week, me and fiance jog for about 30 or more minutes after work. as unfit as i am im starting to enjoy it. I look forward to zoning out and running off my tension
I love your plans. i need to eat more fruit though.

Hey Sara,
Looks like you are on the right track. Number three in your list is the most important of the three, by far.
Cheers,
Adam

Hi Sara
)
I’ve been a bit slack lately with respect to any organized exercise. I do chase my very active toddler around all day so that should count for something
Three things I did (will do again) to be healthy are:
1. Eat raw veggies for lunch; broccoli, carrots, tomatoes and red peppers.
2. Walk the dogs in the evening after supper with the family (nice as it’s something we can all do together).
3. Do a 25 minute Pilates video that I have at home here. I love Pilates (I’m not very good at it mind you but it’s a lot of fun anyway).
Thanks for getting me thinking about exercise again! Can’t wait for the weather to warm up and get outside!

1. Workout in the morning, if I do it at night or in the evening I sleep terribly.
2. Stop drinking so much caffeine.
3. Smile! Weird I know, but being in a good mood is part of being healthy too!

1. Take the dog for at least one long walk a day.
2. Riding my bike. All the snow we have on the ground right now have limited 1 and 2 for the moment. Hurry up spring!
3. Like Sara, I’m trying to eat better and cook more food myself. Also will make the garden a little bigger this year.

Number 3 really is an important one. It’s amazing how much more fun and delicious veggies are when you grow them yourself!
My 3 are:
1. do yoga at least 3 times a week and go on walks at least 5 days a week.
2. grow even more of my food this summer and find more local sources for the things I can’t/won’t grow & raise.
3. enjoy some time off each day, even if only enough time for a cup of tea. I work from home so it seems like I’m working all the time.

1. Get my workout and meditation in first thing in the am. I’m up early and use that quiet time.
2. Get fresh air when I’ve had enough of the computer or work.
3. Make sure I have at least 1 serving of fruit or veggie with every meal. I love fruit, not so good with veggies, so it’s challenging!

Some great points. One more that is implied, but so simple and totally worth it:
~ Breathe. We’re a culture of shallow breathers. Take a few deep, long breaths throughout your day.
I am also trying to eat less processed food. My boyfriend and I signed up for a CSA of sorts (New Roots Organics) and got our first bin this week. It’s our challenge to ourselves to eat it all and not let anything go to waste. It forces us to be creative in how we prepare our meals – and we will incorporate foods we may not normally buy at the store.

1. Read or eat in silence. Having no background noise makes me focus more.
2. Eat more kale. I love that stuff.
3. Get a bike and stop driving around town on all my little errands.
Sounds good to me!

Love this idea!
1. Eat steamed veggies every day (tasty tasty)
2. Walk everywhere rather than drive/bus etc (wear a pedometer to keep accountable)
3. Take some time to myself every day- need to have that alone time to be able to function

1) Do the sinus cleansing thing in the morning–no colds or sinus infections! Yippee!
2) Make time for tea. A small pot of tea in the afternoon and somewhere to just sit and sip is heavenly.
3) Try and stay off the computer at night (like right now!).. and do something creative instead. Collaging, painting, reading, writing.
Love the site!

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! There’s quite a few things I could add in to my life without complicating it: more tea, more fresh air, and breakfast! I’m such a big believer in breakfast. I used to lecture my friends in middle school about the importance of breakfast. I know, annoying, right?

Eating fresher, healthier foods will also allow you to shorten the after-dinner walks. Less to burn and the exercise achieves its goal earlier.

1. Start your day off with a cup of hot tea.
2. Definitely take Roo for a walk every day! I chase my puppy around the house or yard too, but if we miss our walk we get irritable.
3. Drink water instead of soda. I only drink soda as a special treat once in awhile.
February 5th, 2009
Well, I play basketball. So that helps! I play in two different leagues so that’s at least two games a week and I try to sneak out to the gym at least every other day to practice
As far as eating goes, yeah, I’m not the healthiest. I known to eat quite a bit of junk-food too. But on the upside, I am trying to drink less coffee and more water! (Is that even an upside?)

1. Water. It all happens IN you and YOU ARE mostly water and your body thrives on it.
2. Get more sleep. Or rest. Mostly people, self included, are over caffeinated and don’t get enough quality sleep/rest.
3. Exercise more. IMHO it is more important that you exercise than it is to watch your diet IF you have to make a choice between the two. A healthy and strong heart, lungs, good bone density and your body can handle ALMOST anything you put in it.

Have you ever thought about getting a Wii Fit? I’ve never used one personally but heard a lot about their fun + health benefits..

Anyone have experience with Wii Fit, as Glen mentioned? My husband have waffled on the Wii for about a year, and we keep coming back to no. But if Wii Fit were great, that might change the balance. As is, we have a lot of fun for a day or two, and then it sits unused for another couple of weeks. (We have access to one on loan.) Being competitive people with wildly different skill levels also makes gaming (unrelated to Fit) a challenge!
February 5th, 2009
I just came across this article about the wii fit last week. It makes me think that if you don’t use the Wii all that often, you might not use the Wii Fit either. That being said, I’ve never done the Wii Fit exercises, so I don’t actually know how good they are.

It sounds like you’re doing well so far!
1. Since I’m not able to eat gluten (and most other grains for that matter, soy, sugar, legumes, etc, I try to make sure that my plate is 75% raw and/or cooked vegetables and the rest is some sort of lean protein. The more I fill my plate with veggies FIRST, the less room I have for everything else. Furthermore, protein in the morning gives me the most energy.
2. For mental and physical health, I make sure I exercise daily. I stick to the work outs I WANT to do. I have a spinning bike and hand weights at home because I have more self-discipline there than I ever would with a gym membership; I would never go.
3. The more organized I am (schedules, lists, etc) the better I can take care of myself.

1. Start the day with some quiet time…for me, that’s reading my bible, but it could be reading other inspirational books, meditating, journaling, etc. This is by far the most important for me. I still can’t believe the difference it makes in the rest of my day!
2. Yoga…about two good, hard sessions a week, sometimes in a class, sometimes by myself at home.
3. Fruit…I eat 3 to 4 servings of fresh fruit most days, and it feels great! When I was on vacation with friends in Las Vegas, they thought I was crazy to pay for fresh fruit at Starbucks for breakfast, rather than just eating the pop-tarts they brought, but I just feel like I can’t live without it!

Sara – I’ve had a Wii Fit and love it. My wife uses it for Yoga, I do some muscle building exercises and aerobics…and my two daughters love it! There are some fun games on there too that test your balance, like ski jumping, slalom and more. Very cool.
