Simple Ways You Can Start Enjoying Today

As Leo Babauta of Zen Habits pointed out this week, happiness can start now. We can choose to stop waiting for happiness and making it contingent on some future goal (a job, a spouse, “enough” money, etc.). If you’re ready to start enjoying your life today, not tomorrow, or the day after, or at some point in the future, consider starting with these:
Spend a few extra minutes in bed today, luxuriating in the warmth of slept-in sheets.
Eat breakfast without multi-tasking. Enjoy the sight, smell, and taste of your food.
Play a song that gets you revved up before you start your day. Repeat as many times as you need. (”Here I Go Again” by Whitesnake is my embarrassingly regular go-to song. I get to feel like a bad-ass and complete dork at the same time. Sweet!)
Stop saying, “I’ll be happy when…” You don’t need security, true love, prestige, or good taste to be happy. Food, safety, and a good sense of humor will get you through in a pinch.
When you step out the door for the first time, take 10 seconds to really notice your surroundings. Drink them in without judging. (Even if, like me, you live uncomfortably close to cow pastures…)
Remember how badly you wanted to be an adult so that you could live life by your own rules? Enjoy the fact that, for the most part, you get to make your own decisions today.
Say “hi” to your coworkers instead of brushing by them. Ditto for family members.
Celebrate inconsequential victories just for the fun of it. Didn’t burn dinner? You clearly rock.
Leave a kind note for someone to find. Your spouse, child, or janitor will appreciate it, and you’ll probably feel better as well.
Stop waiting for someone else’s approval. If you like where you’re at (or simply where you’re headed), that’s good enough.
Check your progress on your larger goals. The steps you take to get there can be the best part.
Give in to a craving! Nearly everything is okay in moderation.
Find five minutes to sit back and just breathe. Close your eyes and let your concerns take a backseat for just a few moments. Remember that even high priorities are rarely as urgent as our adrenaline tells us they are.
Smile for absolutely no reason. You’re alive; that’s a pretty damn good excuse.
Slip into a pair of comfy socks.
Set aside 15+ minutes for something that’s purely fun. Not all hobbies need to have a purpose or redeeming value. Remind yourself that’s it okay to just have fun.
There are many, many more ways to start enjoying life today. What do you do to take satisfaction in everyday living?

Great post and reminders for me. My days are often so packed I sometimes forget to smell the Roses, smile and laugh.

The “if” and “when” trap are the worst.
Goals are cool, but you’re supposed to enjoy the journey and make the most of what you got.

Teehee. Here I Go Again! At the moment I love Jungle Drum by Emiliana Torrini. It gets me going.
Great list. I recently got a flash new camera and am taking photos every single day – it’s amazing how much you really, properly look at stuff around you – even stuff you see nearly every day – when you’re looking for photo subjects – and how ordinary things can suddenly seem cool and beautiful (like the lump on the tree in my blog post Bump!).

For me I think there is no such thing as adding happiness into our days.
Rather it is a matter of getting out of the way and discovering that happiness is already around.

Sara, you have such a great sense of dorky coolness — I like it!
I find the best way for me to reconnect with living in and enjoying the moment is to get down on the floor and play with my daughter. I try to really understand “her world.” When I’m doing that and looking into her eyes, my own preoccupations just start to seem a bit silly.
Cheers,
Adam

I stop what I’m doing and snuggle with my kids (3 and 6) on the couch. I know they will be too big for this before far too soon.
Also, getting my car washed always boosts my mood.

Currently playing in my world is the soundtrack to the movie version of Mama Mia. I am completely aware that Pierce Brosnan cannot sing. However, listening to this makes me happy, so I listen whenever I can!

I spend a few extra minutes in bed every single morning. When we open the door the cats come pouring in and jump up on the bed. Then they lay there and purr happy to see their humans. It’s such a great way to start the morning!

All alone, I sneak in some reading – random reading from links on twitter. And I make “funny talk” with my twitter pals …it is very heartwarming…
With my kids, I almost always make up a song and dance and act crazy …they love it and I love it

Here’s a few more:
1) Life is uncertain and while eating broccoli is good for you, try eating dessert first a few times.
2) Nothing gets my blood going like Giorgio Moroder’s “Chase” from the movie “Midnight Express.”
3) Pet the kitty (or puppy, depending on your inclination). Not only does it feel good, they will show their appreciation for your love, affection, time and energy in ways you cannot mistake.

As a neuroscientist I can tell you that it’s great for your cognitive abilities if you do what you suggested Sara.
Everytime you challenge your brain with something different, something that breaks your routine, then it’s challenged to work a little harder and form a bunch of new connections – in effect exercise for your mind.
And like your body, an exercised brain is a happy brain.

This fits in so well with my resolution to put a little weekend in my weekends! For too long they’ve been a time to focus non-stop on the Life Maintenance I don’t have time to do during the week. And while I did plenty of that today – cleaning, laundry, bills – I also curled up on the sofa with my book and my dog with some great jazz in the background.

Hi Sara,
I liked the suggestion to eat breakfast without multi-tasking! I usually read the newspapers with breakfast so this applies to me. It just seems such a waste of time to eat and nothing else. Yet it can be a sort of early morning meditation to focus on the moment, taste each morsel, chew consciously… I’m sure I’ll have withdrawal symptoms but I’ll try this out!

Hey the best part of the article was that to smile with no reason. I mean if you are happy or want to be happy then its ok to smile for a while. Actually the whole article was great, but I do the above thing..:)
Life is all about smiles. There is no space for tears or sadness.. Its very simple thing but it takes hell lot of time to understand this…

Definitely, wearing a pair of warm socks while doing exercise and finding a quiet space just to relax and be nice to oneself. Even when we are suffering and worried, we can take the time to embrace all those painful emotions and surround them with a comforting love, the way a mother embraces a restless child. It’s not always easy to “relax” but that naturally arises when we stay with whatever feelings are arising in the moment and accept them as they are without believing the negative thoughts.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughts on simplicity. Take care.
Karen
