Three Nerdy Confessions
Posted on November 26th, 2008 in Simple Living

It took me awhile to come to grips with a certain, somewhat painful fact: I am a nerd. (My husband will confirm this readily.) As I’ve grown into myself, though, I’ve come to appreciate some of my nerdier traits. They are, in the end, what make me me. In the interests of embracing our collective nerdiness, I’m going to share three nerdy confessions with you.
- I watch Flashdance every time it’s on TV. And it totally makes me want to achieve all my wildest dreams.
- My favorite joke is, “What do you get when you cross an elephant and a rhino?” Elephino! (It was on The Muppet Show, and like the audience in the clip, it took me about four times before I got it.)
- I know all the words to pretty much every Michael Bolton song you hate. And I love them all.
Alright, batter up, folks! If you’re game, trip into the comments and share three nerdy confessions of your own. In the meantime, I’ll be shining my pocket protector.

You totally need to watch the Muppet clip to get that joke – it’s aural.
My nerdy confessions:
- I can say supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards – both dociousaliexpilisticfragicalisuper as in the song AND suoicodilaipxecitsiligarflilacrepus, which was my own invention when I was about 10. I can also recite the alphabet backwards at speed. My obsession with saying things backwards continues into adulthood – hence my URL to my personal site (see link).
- I like puns. Even bad ones.
- I went to Tunisia and bought a Star Wars cloak and posed for a photo by a troglodyte home in the real Tatouine.

My kids have this real negative connotation of the word “nerd”. Not that it stops them from saying I’m one – but like you, Sara, I wear the term with pride!! They should have a parade for us – bring the pocket protectors, the RPN calculators, the taped up glasses – maybe we could be in the Macy’s day parade – that’s better than the Rockette’s! (well…maybe not…)
And, just so you don’t think – geez – he really is a nerd (does he have the greasy hair too??) – I exaggerate on here!
So, my nerdy confessions:
1. I like computers, and trying out all sorts of software programs.
2. Electronic gadgets – another turn on (not that way!).
3. My college degree – engineering. I lived the “nerd” life for four years straight…
I love the joke (but it took me a couple of times to get it). And…you can have the Michael Bolton songs! That’s just plain weird…

Hey don’t call my friend a nerd!
3 nerdy things about me
1. I read Barron’s every Saturday
2. I sometimes laugh so hard I snort
3. I dance like a fish.
i am sure if you asked my husband, brother or friends, they could come up with many more.

1. I competed in, and sometimes won, math contests in high school.
2. As if No. 1 weren’t enough…my favorite channels on TV are Science Channel and PBS.
3. I balance my checkbook three different ways. Every week.

“Nerd” is just a common term for intellectual quirks. It’s too bad that kids are being taught (from their peers) that being nerdy is undesirable.
Excuses aside, here are mine:
1. I love chess–I have more books about chess than any other subject.
2. When the setting is just right, I get in “the zone” and write programming for hours on end.
3. The books I read for pleasure are usually related to science/engineering (non-fiction, that is… I’m not a *sci-fi* nerd).

3 nerdy things about me. Limiting it to three is the hard part.
1. My bikes. Working to get them just the way I want them. Sometimes this means going deliberately low tech(steel frames, leather saddles, etc).
2. Reading. Always working on at least one book(usually two) and a magazine.
3. While Michael Bolton isn’t for me, I still listen to John Denver. That’s pretty nerdy.
Got the joke right away(and liked it),I must really be a nerd.
What do you get if you cross a Bull Terrier and a Shi Tzu? Uh, never mind.

Not only am I a nerd, I’m a librarian! The double whammy! Let’s see, three nerdy things…
1. I watch every Star Trek movie every time one comes on TV.
2. I love maps. The walls of my office are decorated with maps.
3. I still say “Far out!” when something exciting happens.
Hopeless, I am.

I have way too many nerdy quirks to just list only 3, but I’ll try:
1. I watch Princess Bride every time its on. That’s high up there on the nerd factor with Star Wars and Star Trek movies.
2. I love checklists of all kinds.
3. I have a whole bunch of little “emergency” kits. I keep the daily one in my purse, the “in the woods” one in a backpack, a car emergency one in the trunk of my car. I even have an emergency cocktail party kit that I’ll bring along to weekends away that has a cutting board, knife, cocktail picks, and the like.

Hey, I was a nerd way before being a nerd was cool in a nerdy way! So I have lots of nerdy quirks, but let me see if I can list three primary ones:
1. I build my own desktop computers. I’ll buy prebuilt laptops but then I’ll have to customize them, at least by adding memory and installing open source software.
2. I’ve been a voracious SF/fantasy reader since I was a pre-teen.
3. I love doing crossword puzzles and Sudoku, especially the 16×16 version.

I can only list three nerdy things! Well, I’ll try.
1. I loved math in high school. Math homework was particularly fun.
2. My whole family watches the National Spelling Bee on TV.
3. I love Sudoku games. My favorite are on the computer, but I also like to play them on paper.

4. Have every episode of every Star Trek Series and all the movies
5. Have own Starfleet uniform with appropriate rank insignia and branch identification to be Fleet Engineer, with communicator pin, tricorder, data PADD and hand phaser.

10. Helping a friend put together a killer S-100 system.
11. My life as a Software Systems Engineer, stretching back several years, and even more as a hobbyist.

I’m teaching my kids that nerdiness is cool.
1.) I was always a Math geek and now am in charge of the Math department for my school district.
2.) Love video games and all kinds of computer stuff.
3.) Love all the typical nerd movies – Lord of the Rings, Star Wars and many more.
I can tell from reading that others have me far beat, but I think its all great! I’d rather embrace my inner dork than hide who I am in order to be ‘cool’. Now if I can just brainwash my kids to believe this way, too…

Too cute.
I’m a huge nerd too. I enjoy grammar and editing; I prefer reading health books to sitting in front of the tv, and in every single one of my classes at university I sit in the front row.
Isn’t it fun to be nerdy?

OH, I think I’m a big nerd as well (But not as big of one as Mr Chiot’s).
1. I love to read, always have, always will (I read many many books a week), and not cool books either, no steamy novels for me – boring educational stuff or financial stuff or gardening stuff.
2. I’m a money tracking nerd, I could tell you exactly how much money I’ve spent on cat litter each year for the past 10 years (or I could average it out for you, or calculate the percentage of increase each year). And this doesn’t just apply to cat litter (I do it for everything!!!).
3. I frakking love Battlestar Gallactica!

OK after reading several of these post I’m not so nerdy as I thought. I think, and I could be wrong, the new “nerd” word is actually geek. I have a friend that gets the magazine Geek. Yes, their is a magazine called Geek and is bought and read by programmer types(I think).
So, I’m a nerd, or a geek, because:
1. I love listening to talk radio.
2. I record cooking shows on the Food Network.
3. I read this blog

It’s only been in the past few years I have owned my nerdiness. I don’t think it’s something to be embarrassed about though – I’m an out and proud nerd! (Every online profile I have says so.)
Nerdy facts –
1. I absolutely love the music to the Big River musical and sing it in the bath with gusto (I live alone).
2. I get excited about the Target puzzle in the weekend papers (it’s a grid with nine letters and you have to make as many words as possible, all of them including the middle letter and there’s one word that uses all nine letters).
3. I have a list of favourite words…which I have committed to the interwebs at http://www.listography.com.
I could go on….

Hmmm… dorkiness, nerdiness, ok here we go:
1. I am a HUGE fan of professional Korean Starcraft (computer game). I watch English commentaries of the tournaments everyday. They make me happy.
2. Back to the Future and Princess Bride helped shape who I am today.
3. I was the spelling bee geek in middle and high school. Don’t yell at me if I misspelled a word in this comment. I probably did.

Perhaps there is a regional difference, but I think I would label myself as a geek and not a nerd. Geek evokes images of the smart kid with eclectic interests. Nerd makes me think of a complete lack of social skills.
Regardless, I think it is becoming more and more acceptable for kids now to be geeks/nerds. Just look at the comments to this post. All these people excited about sharing our collective dorkiness!

Jannie: So, so, so insanely jealous!!
And on the nerd/geek differential, I can testify to that. I have a friend who self-identifies as a geek, but is completely offended if he’s called a nerd. For me, I’m fine with either label; it’s not going to change what I like, however uncool it may be.

1. I know pi to 15 places past the decimal point, and my son knows it to 30.

1) Libraries are my favorite places. People know their local video store like I know the inside of a library. It’s one of the top stops {used bookstores are a close 2nd] to visit when I am on vacation in a new place.
2) I say words like “banana!” or even “darn it!” instead of the more standard expletives that we all know so well. The word “nerd” is also used as a term of endearment by me.
3) I sit in the front row in classes, workshops, lectures, anywhere possible. This is partially because, even with glasses or contacts, I can never see quite well enough. But it is also because I love to learn and being physically close to the person presenting the learning absolutely thrills me.

Ha, I just wrote a post about my nerd offset credits. Glad to see others embracing their inner dorks. <3
1) I took a class on Lord of the Rings and the prof deferred to me on a question of the Elvish language.
2) My blog is the fusion of my obsessions with WoW and knitting.
3) I made a spreadsheet to balance out (offset) my nerdiest things with slightly less nerdy things. The nerdy won, and my inner dork is once more embraced.
