Three Things on Your To-Do List

Since tomorrow is Blog Action Day, I’m bumping the weekly “three things” to today! This week, I’m trying really hard to keep my to-do list in check. Instead of loading it with tons of items, I’m taking a cue from fellow blogger Jean and working on a “possibility list.”
So in the interests of bringing a simple approach to the idea of productivity, this week’s list is all about the the to-do list. Challenge yourself to go small: what are the only three things you need to get done today?
Here’s mine:
1. Write a solid post for Blog Action Day
2. Catch up with my mom
3. Hold everyone accountable to the same rules in today’s programs
As I write this, I feel much better about the day ahead. I can do these things easily! After feeling like there aren’t enough hours in the day to complete half the things I’d like to do, this exercise is helping me feel like I’m doing okay.
So tell me: what are the only three things you’d put on your to-do list?

Gracia: Hope the weekend trip was fun! Boo ironing, though.
Adam: Congratulations! And definitely check out Blog Action Day. It looks like lots of folks will be participating.
Katie: Ah, unplugging: what a valiant goal! Best of luck with that!
Jen E: That sounds like a pretty fun day (laundry aside).
David: Eew. Unclogging the sink is a crappy job, but somebody’s got to do it, right? I think I read somewhere that vinegar can help…
Ramona: Turkey leftovers… Drool… Enjoy! And good luck with the resume. Sounds like a new job coming up?
Frank: Yay Apple store! Have a blast with that! Any particular toy in mind?
Stacey: Dude, you are slammed! I hope tomorrow’s list has something nice for you on it!
Simple Sapien: I’m totally excited about Blog Action Day. Except I can’t remember my password and also can’t reset it. Sigh. At least I can feel good about being completely altruistic about it!
Rachel: Oooh, so jealous of your #3! Enjoy every minute of it. I love that you’ve 100 percent got the spirit of living simply. Date night should always be a priority (as should bottles of wine…).
Jamie: Hahaha! No kidding.
And 10 posts? Do you do them all at once, or do you just polish them all at once?
Vered: Ugh, the never-ending laundry pile! I can’t wait to read your take on poverty for Blog Action Day.
Marissa: Wow, that’s a great list. You’ve got relationships, self-care, and frugality all on there. I love it!
Eric: Oh, no! I’m sure the lack of progress will sort itself out if you can solve the lack of time.
I’m so happy to see that lots of us will be joining in Blog Action Day together!

So I’m sitting here reading your blog post and in the background I have a Word document containing my To Do List… I have a mac so I was doing the whole [apple+tab] thing to toggle between the internet (your post) and my To Do List. All I can do is nod my head…smile…exhale deeply and think (how the heck I’m going to tackle this list and make it smaller?!).
But really, reading this is a nice reminder to 1. prioritize, 2. make things simpler. We (everyone) have a knack for making things complicated sometimes ya know?

Carla: What a perfect reminder that celebrations should be prioritized so they don’t get glossed over!
Evelyn: Wow—that’s a full plate. I hope you also find a few minutes to relax and just smile.
J.D.: Hmm…. Momentum. That’s an idea I haven’t given much thought to yet, but I like it. Hmm…
Matthew: You’ve got such a great balance here. Putting journaling on your to-do list is so cool, and I don’t doubt that it pays off with creative ideas constantly.

V Higgins: Does it help you keep your home life relaxed to create two separate lists? If so, that might be a wonderful tactic for folks to try!
October 16th, 2008
Sara: Very much! My work can be very stressful and it’s very difficult to keep that separate from my home life because I tend to personalize things. I find if I have a to-do list for work and one for home, I can keep those two things in their own worlds, which makes my time at home with my hubby much more relaxing. I know he’s told me how much he appreciates my striving to keep work at work.

Don’t I know it. The first system my wife and I refurbished and gave away, was to a young man in high school with moderate to severe autism. His special education teacher asked us for help, mainly because his handwriting was illegible, and she thought being able to send his work to a printer would help him. At the time, he was reading at a 5th grade level. By the end of that year, he was reading at his grade level. He graduated with his class and went on to a scholarship at UCLA, where he graduated with honors in computer science and electrical engineering. He just finished his thesis for his PhD in solid state engineering physics and is working at AT&T in their Engineering Physics R&D Lab.

jrandom42: Impressive story! I hope it will inspire a few more folks to consider donating and/or refurbishing computers to those in need.
