Three Things You’re Dying to Learn
Posted on September 24th, 2008 in Personal Development, Three Things

A fulfilled life is all about learning. Whether it’s something easy (understanding NFL penalties) or something highly challenging (nanoscience), learning is life. This blog has been a huge wave of learning for me, and it’s been fantastic. The truth is, I’m addicted.
So, what do you want to learn? Gimme three things you’re interested in! Here’s mine:
- How to make my grandmother’s Swedish pancakes (she never wrote the recipe down!)
- How to speak another language (I’m sadly monolingual)
- How to meditate (I really struggle with quieting the inner monologue)
What’s stopping you from learning these things? Are there any people out there who can help you learn them? Give me the spill on your educational aspirations. I can’t wait to hear them!

Well, Sara, I’d like to learn these three things:
To speak a little more Italian than the basic words I know now
How to make bread (I know, but it’s fantastic!)
To swim - i just never got round to it
I guess all that’s stopping me is time!

My three are:
1. The secret recipe to Women’s Institute chocolate cake and icing.
2. French.
3. Making money writing creative wonderful beautiful things (not SEO or hard sell marketing)
Scott,
The Hairy Bakers’ bread recipe is brilliant and very simple:

Instead of making white rolls, you can make a 2lb loaf - cook for 45 minutes at 200 degrees centigrade.

1) How to quilt.

3) How to play piano.
I’ve got a shot at the first two but since I’m not musically inclined at all, the third one may never happen.

1. How to knit ( I don’t want to start buying wool until I use up more of my fabric stash)
2. How to make more vegetarian dishes that are appropriate for my kids (we have a dairy and tomato allergy in the family, so it makes it hard)
3. How to use a drill. I tend to hoarde all my drill projects and make my husband do them all at once every couple of months. I need a drill I can lift to do this - ours is about 15 or 20 lbs and ancient.

2. How to navigate by the stars
3. How my uncle wrote Ireland
For the first one, no matter how many times I watch Frosty, I can’t figure it out. I think it’s the hat.
For navigating by the stars, it’s in my queue.
For the last one, I need to figure out the right questions.

Learn Spanish and Arabic
Learn how to Surf
Learn how to play an instrument - piano, drums or guitar most likely.
I teach meditation, and am writing a getting started post about it. It’s not as hard as you might think!
September 24th, 2008
1. Photography - I can see the photo in my mind but I have no idea how to capture it with my camera.
2. UX/User Interfaces - How people interact with technology and the world around them fascinates me. I’d like to learn how to think about those things and create new ways to do so.
3. How to make my aunt’s crepes. Delicious.

1. Run a marathon: Am training for one now.
2. Write a book: Am trying to write a children’s book and am learning about how to publish it.

Scott: Yeah, I’m not much of a swimmer either and it really bugs me. I am an excellent dog-paddler, though!
David: When you find out the secret, feel free to pass it on! And thanks for adding in the bread resource for all of our future breadmakers!
Mary: Who knows? Perhaps you’re a latent musical genious? I like the breadth of your goals and wouldn’t mind doing them myself.
Jill: 20 pounds?! Wow! No wonder you outsource those to your husband! I have a friend who loves finding any excuse to use her drill, so I imagine you could have some serious fun with this one.
Nathaniel: About the bike, it’s not embarrassing, it’s logical. Who wants to fall on concrete repeatedly? I was a stubborn kid. I stopped trying for about six months because I didn’t see the point of eating it so early and so often. It was worth it eventually, though.
J.D.: You have some imagination on you! And I love the self-sufficiency of celestial navigation. It would be nice to know that if all techonology failed, I could still find my way home.
Jen E: It feels like there’s not enough time to learn all the languages we’d like to, doesn’t it?
jrandom42: Good luck on #2.
Your mom sounds like she worked a few miracles. Is she still around for you to ask about it?
Jack: You’re doing #2 right now!
I would imagine that it’s a challenging time to learn about investing, as all of the rules that were set in stone are suddenly broken. Perhaps that makes it a perfect time…
Stacey: Please please please send me the link to your post when it’s up!
LivSimpl: Crepes… drool… Outside of the crepes, it sounds like the things you’re ready to learn could take you in very interesting places. I imagine there’s loads more to be learned and perfected in most user interfaces.
Maya: I so want to run a marathon! I also share your goal of children’s publishing. You’ve got some adventurous things planned!
Vered: So happy to bring some fun to your day! And black diamond, that’s seriously cool. I can only snowboard bunny slopes at this point, but the feeling is still exhilarating!
Erin: We are so on the same page. I’m trying to learn Spanish while improving my sewing and technology skills. Keep it up! (The sewing can be frustrating, but is so worth it.)
Avani-Mehta: I’m with you on the nodding and agreeing. There’s pretty much nothing I wouldn’t want to learn!

Bamboo Forest: You sound like you’re going to be a true Renaissance man! I also think there’s so much inspiration and curiousity to be found in studying the stars and space.

Hi Sara,
I was wondering what your 3 things would be for this week.
For me:
1) How to create a blog theme from scratch - including all of the coding
2) How to be more efficient with my time
3) How to swim better - I took lessons but don’t feel comfortable in water that’s over my head.

I’d like to learn:
1) law, as I want to go to law school
2) control my vocal cords so that after an hour or two of teaching I won’t be hoarse from straining
3) cook as I am useless in the kitchen
September 24th, 2008
Barbara: I’m also interested in theme design. I love the idea of being able to create from scratch.
Chase: I’m so glad you’re pro-active on the issue of bullying. Even if it’s there’s no perfect answer, it’s still important for kids to feel like educators are on their side.
Faye: Another person interested in cooking! I think the gamer’s mantra of “fail early and fail often” applies equally well to the kitchen.

Chris: Driving stick is a good one! I’m always afraid that one’s going to bite me in the ass in an emergency. We’ve got very similar interests, Chris.

1. I would love to learn how to make money via the internet, so I can be a stay at home mom… been looking into blogging.
2. I would love to learn how to make homemade bread… my grandma made mouthwatering buns for her family of 11 children everyday! I don’t think I inherited that gene!
3. I would someday like to learn how to knit.
September 25th, 2008
Trying to narrow it down to just three has been hard, but on the top of my list right now -
1. How to manage my time better to find a balance between work and home.
2. How to knit, I am in awe of people’s talent in this area.
3. Landscape design, my yard is an empty canvas since I bought it last year and the 1/2 acre of nothing is so overwhelming that I haven’t really done anything with it. Would love to have a designed plan and be able to work towards it as money and time allows.
September 25th, 2008
1. Another language. Probably French. Its difficult because if you don’t use it (and I don’t have much chance to use it) you lose it. I’ve been trying to learn for years! I guess it doesn’t help that I haven’t had a chance to travel. Maybe someday!
2. To knit a sweater. I can knit blankets and scarves, but not clothing.
3. To do my own pedicures. I’ve tried, but my feet always end up looking a mess. It would save me $$ to do them myself.

Spiritlight: I’ll have to give that recipe a try! The running theory in my family is that it was a magic pan, since we’ve never been able to make ‘em like Grandma. I love your singletasking goal!
Dawn: Ooh, David above left a bread recipe that sounds like it’s worth a try! And definitely try your hand at blogging; even without money, it’s just a fun way to express yourself.
Lisa: Your ambitious idea about landscape design is exciting! Check out landscapers’ websites for ideas, and see what plants they’re using. Finding the right perennial plants for your climate zone is a big part of an impressive yard.
Carla: Ooh, pedicures is a good one! Perhaps a friend could learn manicures and you could get together for an afternoon of indulgence. And yeah, my toes always come out looking like a kicked a can of paint…

Gosh this a tough one. I’m interested in so much…
1. I want to improve my french skills & learn German.
(there are great podcast lessons you can download for free)
2. I want to learn to kayak well. I have gone 2 times and it was harder than I expected.
3. Like Nathaniel, I want to “re-learn” how to ride a bike. Last year I got a hold of a used bike and bought a new seat for it and a helmet. Then I found myself terrified to ride it. I haven’t rode a bike in about 18 years. I’m so nervous of a wipe-out!
Simple Sapien: my friend introduced me to a great website that you might like: http://www.investopedia.com
The site has great tutorials.
I’d also love to learn to quilt and I’m always working on improving my bread-making skills. It’s so satisfying to see “the fruits of your labour” become a beautiful loaf of bread.
September 25th, 2008
Spiritlight: You know the way to my heart!
Melaniesd: I hadn’t thought of podcasts for learning a language! Hello! And best of luck with the bike. My worst experience was wiping out in the middle of a giant, busy bike circle freshman year of college. So embarrassing, but all you can do is get back on and keep pedaling. Perhaps that’s a good metaphor for life…

Dying to learn? Spanish==>although I haven’t been trying so dying to learn doesn’t really apply does it.
To make a woman happy. Not women, just a woman. And I don’t mean you know where I mean COMPLETELY happy. Is it possible? Maybe its really relationships that I want to learn to master but that can’t be it either because I have plenty of good satisfying relationships with my gender.
How to overhaul a cars engine. I’ve always wanted to learn to do that. Some men can pop the hood and start pulling stuff out and fix it==>that’s not me. I would love to become very mechanical.
September 25th, 2008
I can’t say that I’m dying to learn anything. I’m a hobby or workshop junkie already as it is. But here are the top 3 things I’m hoping to learn in the near time:
1. Soul cleansing.
2. Talking or connecting seamlessly with my spirit guides.
3. Develop my sixth sense or intuition.

Jesse: I love your ideas! I personally don’t think it’s possible to make another person truly happy (it’s got to come from inside), but you can certainly help them build that foundation for happiness and give them plenty of opportunities to choose to be happy. That’s just me, though, so feel free to ignore it. Either way, it’s a wonderful goal you have.
Evelyn: Ah, the joys of being a hobby junkie! I think you’re a perfect example of constant learning and development.

My three things:
1. Learn to sew again. (I learned back in HomeEc when I was in grammar and high school, but I would love to take a sewing class).
2. Learn how to do more than single crochet and “knit”. I would love to make socks.
3. I like the learn to swim people. I grew up at the beach, took swimming lessons and still look ridiculous when I attend to swim laps. Maybe learning some technique would help.
September 27th, 2008
mom23guys1girl: Those are all things you can definitely tackle! I enjoy sewing because it’s creative, but also really works my brain. My spatial intelligence gets tested to the max, and that’s probably not a bad thing!

3. How to stop in rollerblades. I don’t care what people say, they are not like roller skates or ice skates.
and I could go on…Love life
September 30th, 2008
Somone: Ha! I can’t even stop on roller skates. I have distinct memories of slamming into the walls of the rink in order to stop. You know, where your lower body stops and yet your upper body keeps going? And good for you for having the patience to get to 2 and 3/4!
