Weekly Links: Dog Hair Edition

It’s official. The dog owns the house, and my husband and I just live in it. When the dog hair covers your computer and makes it overheat, you can be fairly certain you have a problem. As a result, I’ve gone into commando mode. I’ve laid out a three-pronged attack plan designed to neutralize the enemy (the hair, not the dog). Will I be victorious? Time–and the vacuum cannister–will tell. But one thing is certain–I’m not surrendering without a fight.
As I prepared for battle, the following articles also clung tenaciously to my mind:
Vered at MomGrind stirred up a fantastic discussion of work-life balance with Being a Lawyer Was Sucking the Life out of Me. Read through the comments on this one; many readers opened up about career mistakes and career successes.
Marelisa at Abundance Blog gave us a wonderfully comprehensive guide to Conquering Space: Decluttering and Organizing. If you want advice on how to go beyond simple fixes and make your space truly serve your needs, read every word of this.
Avani Mehta reminds us that the solutions to some of life’s most challenging problems can be right in front of us. Of course, she finds an interesting way to get us there, with a story about Harry Houdini.
Zen Habits features 20 Great Ways to Find More Free Time. What I enjoyed about this compilation was that most of the suggestions involved getting rid of things, not adding processes.
Nathalie of Billionaire Woman reminds us that there’s a difference between fulfillment and achievement. It’s a great concept, and the article is well-written. I definitely recommend taking a tour of the site.
Over at The Reductionist, NeimanMarxist compared the process of simplifying with the process of losing weight. She writes, “In truth, I only gave up four out of every five glasses of wine, and enjoyed the one I did drink much more than I would have enjoyed any single glass before.” It’s an excellent comparison, and her conclusion regarding livable results rang true with me.
Also, Alison at Diamond-Cut Life brought up interesting question about e-cars: are they really green? I’d encourage anyone who knows about the subject to dive into the comments and add an opinion.
Finally, Marc at Marc and Angel Hack Life brought us 20 Questions You Should Ask Yourself Every Sunday. While my first instinct was to cringe at having to go through 20 questions, I realized that it’s a great way to force yourself to reflect on your life. I’d recommend giving it a try with all 20–I’ll be doing that this Sunday.

Your dog looks like a loveable rogue, Sara!
I’m not sure whether it’s male or female but I’m sure it’s a faithful companion. Does he steal your beloved chocolates??
Thank you for sharing the useful links as well.

To steal a quote from Squakfox’s twitter feed: “Dog hair - a renewable resource.”
Dog hair is a never-ending battle in my house. We did a complete deep clean last weekend - and filled a brand new vacuum bag with the stuff. Ugh! Small price to pay for all of that loyalty and love, though.
Thanks for the great links.

Scott,
Loveable rogue is a pretty great descriptor for Roo. I would never let him steal chocolate, though–mostly because I don’t like sharing.
Heidi,
That’s a fantastic quote! And I’m with you that in the end, it’s a small price to pay.

It seems like Roo has posed for the snap - Heads up and a big smile
Thanks for the link love.

I no longer have a dog, but I kind of long for the day where I can pick up dog hair once again.
Thanks for the link love, I really appreciate it!

Great roundup! Very pretty dog! I came home to a house full of dog hair. We had someone dog sit and she fed and walked them but oh my I forgot how much that fur adds up after weeks of not following behind them with the Dyson.
Just a little side note - I have to get back on my commenting game. I used to be near the top of that commentators list.

Your dog is like my children. They don’t pay rent, they eat all the food, they mess up everything and yet they run the house and I let them.
Great lists of linky love.

I see, you and your husband are guests at Roo’s house. What a beautiful dog, and he looks really good natured. Thanks for the link love.

get a fur-minator brush, they are expensive ($50) but work great! I have 3 dogs and it’s cut down on the amount of hair so I only have to vaccumm once a wk now. (it also comes with a 30-day money back guarantee)
good luck

Oh, I can relate. I work at our lovely huge kitchen table. So, there I was the other night happily typing away and then I glanced and the table. Then I stared at the table. Then I almost screamed because of the table. Cat hair! Tons and tons of cat hair!!! The calico I get, but I specifically got the Siamese because they aren’t supposed to shed. Lies! Lies I tell you!!!

Avani: He does look posed! It’s actually his “there’s a treat dangling in front of me” look. If he didn’t have so much eye distortion, you could probably the reflection of some kind of goodie!
Nathalie: You’re welcome! And thanks for the reminder that in an odd way, it’s a privilege to get to pick up dog hair.
Emily: All hail the Dyson! It really does work well with dog hair. And welcome home!
Chris: You nailed it! We wouldn’t have it any other way.
Vered: You’re so welcome. What a huge week you’ve had!
Marelisa: No, thank you for taking the time to write such in-depth pieces! And Roo is definitely good-natured. In most other pictures, his droopy eyes make him look constantly unimpresssed and/or inebrieated.
Ida: I love the Furminator! It’s amazing how much fur comes off with that tool. In fact, it’s part of my three-pronged plan…
Urban Panther: Cruel, cruel lies! We thought we won the jackpot with Roo–he didn’t shed a hair for the first three or so months after we adopted him. Then one day he started and hasn’t looked back. Serves us right for being so smug. Give the cats a pet for me, please (if they let you).
Janet: Thank you so much–I love what a generous blogger you are.

Hi Sara,
I always like your weekly roundups. It’s like the best of the best (for the week). Keep up the good work!

Thanks, Barbara! I really enjoy getting to spread some love around and recognize writers who’ve put in great effort.

Great links. And if you are looking for an awsome tool to help cut down on the shedding try the furminator. It is amazing.

Rachel,
Thanks for the suggestion. I picked up the Furminator when the local pet store recommend (and was selling out of it!) and was not disappointed. I’ve never gotten to the point where fur stops coming off, though. Roo is like Wolverine when it comes to regenerating!

LOL! Thanks Heidi for the mention. Indeed, dog hair is a renewable resource. Even with a short-haired dog. Sigh. I do love my doggie though. @Sara I wash my doggie every weekend…this helps control the hair population…at least in my own mind.
