Quick and Dirty Pantry Clean-up

Is your pantry bursting at the seams? Are your canned goods spawning? Time for a quick and dirty decluttering session! Remember, quick and dirty isn’t about getting it done perfectly, it’s about getting it done good enough for now. Here’s how I tackle the pantry when it gets unruly:
- Scan for items you can’t remember purchasing and toss or donate them. Not sure when that can of creamed corn came into your life? Then there’s a big, fat chance it’s out of code. Either way, it’s time for it to go. Check the date and toss it if the expiration date has passed. If not, toss it in a food drive bag. You’re clearly not interested, so pass it on to someone who needs the food.
- Seek and destroy container clutter. If you buy things in bulk, they’ll usually come in large boxes. By the time you’re halfway through the stash, the box is just taking up space. Empty the contents onto your shelves (if that makes more room) or a smaller container and chuck the Meta-Stuff.
- Stick like items together. Sometimes clutter isn’t clutter, it’s just disorganization. Put breakfast items together, snacks together, drinks together, and so on. Plus, this is a good way to figure out what you need and what you have too much of. (I have, like, eight cake mixes but no tubs of frosting…)
- Start eating! Okay, I’m not talking about stuffing yourself sick right this second, but there’s no point in beautifying your pantry if you’re not using the items you’ve already got. So start cooking with the things you’ve already got (that are now kind of in order) and you’ve found an automatic way to keep the clutter to a minimum in the future.
Woo-hoo! You’re done! If you’ve got any tips to add (or just a record-breaking out of code item), let it fly in the comments!

This is all great advice! I sometimes like to gaze at the neatly stacked rows of canned goods in my kitchen
Here’s a link to the kitchen simplifying project I undertook a while back

Oh man! You caught us! We really need to clean-up our pantry, but just can’t bring ourselves to get the sucker organized.
Maybe I’ll print out this artlce and stick it on the frig as a reminder.

@Emily: Your kitchen is adorable! I love the clean counters with the red coffee maker. I have to say, though, I’m a little bit concerned about the amount of peanut butter on hand.
@Marc and Angel: I’d love to be on your fridge. And I’m not exactly innocent–there are some things my pantry that I bought while living in a different state. That’s old.

Ah, the organized pantry, one of the best ways of creating domestic bliss

Marelisa,
It was your blissful closet that got me thinking…

We have this problem all the time! I like the 2nd one, that would really help clear up some space. We have one cabinet in particular that just seems to burst at the seams. Maybe I can assign this task to one of my kids…

Oh dear, I’m one of those people who tend to not worry too much about the mess that can’t be seen
I may be stepping out of line here, but I love the saying:
“A tidy house is a sign of a wasted life”
Ok, now you can all rip me to pieces….

Mary,
I’m actually in agreement with you for the most part! That’s why I love quick and dirty solutions: fix the problems that are stressing you out or wasting your time without turning your home into a 100 percent sterile clean room.

Sara, do you have a camera in my house?
I have this pantry that has a turntable in it. Well, the shelf next to the bottom has fallen down, (it now rests on top of the stuff that’s on the bottom shelf) and I have been meaning to fix that for weeks. Now I read your post and I know you must have seen that (some how) and wrote this to put some fire under me.
Okay, Okay, I promise I will fix that tomorrow and get the rest of the pantry organized at the same time.

I’ve just spent several days sorting out my pantry and couldn’t believe the amount of stuff I’d ‘doubled up’ on just because I didn’t know I already had some. I’ve now listed everything in my home organisation folder and will NOT let it get into that kind of mess again (actually the food was all stacked on shelves that I couldn’t get to properly and the cupboard that’s now the pantry was full of all kinds of crap that should never have come into the house in the first place!)
I hate throwing food but some of it just had to go. I do think it’ll mean that less will get thrown in the long run though.

@Barbara: Drat! I knew you’d find out about the secret camera eventually…
@Sharon J: It stinks to throw away food, doesn’t it? But like you’re saying, it provides pretty good motivation to not let it happen again.

I helped my granny clean out her spice cabinet, and some of her spices were 30 years old! We laughed and laughed. Like you said, if she hasn’t used it by now…

It’s funny, my wife is always “telling” me about how she does all the cleaning, but she always seems to leave the pantry and the fridge for ME to clean out conveniently.
Both get a TON of randoms in there that usually see 4 or 5 things each that have been in there too long; but I have to admit, I enjoy seeing it cleaned out as well!

I regularly clean out my pantry, I freak out if it gets too messy, I like to see the labels and things need to be arranged according to height. I sometime straighten up as I go or I’ll dedicate a Saturday to fixing it back.
It’s great to see what you have that way you don’t spend money buying stuff you already purchased, but couldn’t find because of clutter.

@Rachel: Wow, your granny totally has my three year old spices beat. Now I have something to strive for!
@Hank: If you’re the one responsible for the fridge and pantry, that means you get to eat all the almost out of code goodies, right?
@Natural: Hee hee. I love the image of you flipping out because cans aren’t in order of descending height. I’m trying to get better at straightening up as I go like you do.

I wish! With 2 young kids, there are most certainly no goodies left at the end of life for the foods!
